passed to his eternal life on March 28, 2018. He was born on March 2, 1947, in Northampton, MA and lived with his parents, George and Maureen Callahan and his brother Joe, who have predeceased him, and is survived by his sister Maureen (Muffy) Munger of Stamford, CT and several nephews and their children. He attended Annunciation Grammar School and St. Michael's High School in Northampton, earned his bachelor and master's degrees and began his teaching career in Cumberland, RI in 1970. He worked at McCourt Middle School, helped open North Cumberland Middle School in 1971, then transferred to Cumberland High School finishing out his career. Considered a "great guy" by so many of his students, he taught a law course along with history, and organized many of the school's graduation ceremonies. He was a member of the NEA, and an "honorary member" of the AFT, attending and helping at many educational conferences.
Mike loved to travel, taking many cruises through the Caribbean and to Alaska. He spent time with friends in Florida, summers on Marth's Vineyard, and drove cross country with his sister. He was a techno geek, helping his friends with their computer issues, always with a new gadget, and loved flying around the world on his computer. A voracious reader, when relaxing he always had a book or an e-reader in his hand, that is, when there was no football game or NASCAR event on TV. He had a subscription to PPAC for many years, enjoying a meal and a glass of fine wine in the city as well as the performance. When he retired in 2003 his attention turned to refurbishing and driving his blue Vette, as well as discovering ways to avoid traffic problems as a driver for Hertz.
Being Irish, Mike spent many an evening with his friends tipping a few at local haunts and was always ready for a verbal sparring match. He was a loyal friend, offering support when needed, a word of wisdom or of caution, but always gracious in his dealings with others, never seeking attention for himself. He will be sorely missed.
When he learned of his illness, Mike faced the future with courage and grace, making friends of Dr. Nadeem, Dr. Luke and Dr. Bacon and other health professionals who were such helpful partners in his journey. His family and friends are grateful for the care he received from them and from the staff at St. Antoine's Residence and Beacon Hospice.
A private service will be held at St. Antoine"s Residence. Mike's many friends are welcome to gather for a reception from 12:30 till 2:30 on April 7 at Tavolo Restaurant, 970 Douglas Pike (Rte 7), Smithfield, RI. True to form, he didn't want the fuss of a formal "wake", but we need a chance to remember him, tell the stories, sing the songs and say good-bye. He said that was okay. www.thekeefefuneralhome.com
